Showmanship abounded Tuesday evening at the 56th annual Decatur County Farm Bureau Talent Show.
Contestants in the junior and senior divisions performed more than 20 acts at the talent show, ranging from vocal solos to instrumentals to tumbling displays. The champions from each category and division are eligible to continue on to state-level competition.
In the junior vocal solo category, third place went to Kassidy Jacobs; second place to Alli Harrison; and first place to Kylie Ross, who sang "The Girl I Mean to Be." First place junior vocal group went to Stephen, Dominic and Bernard Reen, who sang "The 50 States." Second place in the junior novelty solo category went to Austin Dean, while first went to Walker Taylor, who sang "Small Town Southern Man." The first place dance group was Cheyenne Dean and Maddy Norton, who danced to "Rock Star." First place in the tumble group category went to "The Flippin' Dancers," Breanna Metz, Rheagan Day, Maddy Day, Ashley Crain and Hailey Brown, who danced to "The Tribal Dance." Lynea Bell won first place tumbling solo. In the intrumental solo category, third place went to Bernard Reen; second place went to Stephen Reen; and first place, as well as overall junior champion, went to Dominic Reen, who played "Toccata."
In the senior division, the first place tumbling solo was performed by Kaitlynn Scheidler. First place novelty solo went to Elizabeth Crank, who played an original song, "Today's Gone." The first place dance group was Kaitlynn Scheidler and Kyra Spears, who danced to "Wait a Minute." In the vocal solo category, third place went to Katie Swinford; second place to Nichole Adkins; and first place, as well as overall champion, to Grace Fiske, who sang "Hurt."
The contestants ranged from ages 6 to 21, and showcased a variety of skills. One of the youngest, 6-year-old Walker Taylor, who won first place junior novelty solo, shared his thoughts about the experience.
"I thought it was fun," he said.
Taylor received his guitar two years ago from Santa, and has been teaching himself ever since.
Apparently the budding guitarist is eager to begin his performance career, according to parents Josh and Sarah, as soon as he stepped off the stage he announced his plans to play again next year. In the meantime, Taylor says his next goal is to learn the song "Shiftwork" by his favorite artist, Kenny Chesney.
