A combative subject and a short pursuit for the Greensburg Police Department ended in an arrest late Wednesday night.

Joseph Allen Weir, 51, Greensburg, was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated with a prior, resisting law enforcement and domestic battery. He was booked at the Decatur County Jail at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday.

According Police Chief Brian Heaton, the department received a report of a domestic dispute at 10:47 p.m. at the 600 block of N. Indiana Street. GPD officers responded to the call to the residence that Heaton said had a history of domestic violence issues.

When law enforcement units arrived at the scene, the suspect, later identified as Weir, was leaving the area in a vehicle at a very high rate of speed, Heaton reported. Because of the nature of the call, the history at the residence, the alleged drunkenness of the subject and the high rate of speed involved, the officers at the scene were thrust into a more serious matter.

After speeding away from the police for about six blocks, Weir was successfully pulled over by the GPD on N. Ireland Street.

“The subject was not compliant with officers’ instructions at the traffic stop,” Heaton explained.

Because of the nature of the alleged crime and the other factors of the situation, the police officers attempted to take Weir into custody with caution. However, he continued to resist both physically and verbally, Heaton said.

“(Weir) did offer physical resistance when they were taking him in,” Heaton said.

He added that they used “the reasonable force necessary to” subdue Weird, which included Tasering him to make him compliant and remove the GPD officers from harm’s way.

Once stunned and handcuffed, Weir allegedly continued to offer some resistance, but it wasn’t much due to the constraints. He also allegedly tried to convince the GPD officers of his innocence several times during the difficult arrest. He continued to struggle somewhat on his way to the Decatur County Jail, Heaton said.

Deputies from the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department aided the GPD at the scene, while Weir was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated with a prior, domestic battery and resisting law enforcement. A conviction upon a charge of domestic battery could result in a D Felony that could lead to up to three years in jail and a fine of up $10,000.
