Following in the success of the previous Cover Crop Field Days in the county, the Decatur County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is bringing the event back for another round, this time with a seasonal twist.

According to information released by the SWCD, on Monday, Nov. 9, the organization, in conjunction with the Clifty Creek Watershed Project, will hold an Autumn Cover Crop Field Day. The field day is scheduled to last from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Wenning Farms, located at 1512 N. County Road 80 NE., in Greensburg.

Cover Crops can protect residents’ farms by holding the soil in place and as a consequence, erosion is reduced. Also, Cover Crops can increase the quality of soil by adding additional organic matter to the plants, the release states.

The field day will highlight cover crop experts who will be on hand to speak about topics like planting options, nutrient cycling and spring burndown procedures while walking through about 60 test plots. Guest speakers will include Barry Fisher of the Natural Resource Conservation Services and Dan Towery of Ag Conservation Solutions.

Light refreshments will be provided to guests, and RSVPs are requested to the Decatur County Soil and Water Conservation District office at 812-663-8685 ext. 3.
