The robbery suspect who engaged in a police shooting about two miles north of the city died late Thursday evening from his wounds, according to the Indiana State Police.
A press release sent by Sgt. Noel Houze, public information officer for the ISP Versailles post, stated Dustin W. Wise, 27, of Fortville, died at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. An autopsy was performed Friday and the preliminary findings indicated Wise died as a result of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Wise was accused of committing a string of robberies that spanned Lawrenceburg, Glendale and Batesville Tuesday. A Greensburg Police Officer and ISP trooper spotted his vehicle on I-74 approaching Greensburg, Houze said. Wise exited the interstate and led police on a pursuit north on State Road 3, according to police reports. Near County Road 400 North, Wise pulled over and fired a gun, a pistol he had allegedly used in the three robberies.
According to Houze, police saw and heard the shot and returned fire. A Greensburg Police officer and ISP trooper returned fire. In all, Houze said four shots were fired - the self-inflicted shot from Wise and three from the officers, which struck the vehicle. All three shots were recovered in the crime scene investigation conducted by the ISP, the release states.
