Commissioners Rebuilding Bridge At Lake McCoy

The Decatur County Commissioners began their meeting, Monday, by discussing the eastern entrance to the community at Lake McCoy.

In the past, the road has been rebuilt a number of times due to flooding. Currently, there is a hole in excess of 10 feet deep, Highway Superintendent Mark Mohr explained. One idea was to simply not rebuild this time and have just one entrance to the area. However, Commissioner Rick Nobbe noted, that would not be ideal in case of emergency.

Another solution would be to rebuild using grouted rip-rap. However, Mohr noted, such a structure could form hidden holes beneath the surface that could prove dangerous. Therefore, the commissioners voted to proceed toward rebuilding using a product called ArmorFlex.

AmorFlex is produced by ArmorTec and is a flexible matrix of interlocking concrete blocks. The blocks are identical and interconnected by cables that prevent them from being washed away or otherwise disturbed. It is used, Mohr explained, in low water crossings in some areas and has proven itself nation-wide.

By laying a groundwork of ArmorFlex, the county would reduce necessary future repairs. Rather than reconstructing the whole structure, surface grading and stone would be all that would be necessary. The ArmorFlex would stay in place and maintain a level of safety, although it would not be level with the approaches on either side, Mohr noted.

Bryan Robbins, Executive Director of HOTTCity, also informed the commissioners that his organization is joining forces with the Downtown Greensburg Development Corporation (DGDC) to form Main Street Greensburg. This joint effort will bear its first fruit during this year’s holiday season. Trees will arrive to decorate the courthouse lawn on the 19th, Robbins said, with the Holiday Walk on the 24th.

Although the commissioners had agreed to host Santa if no other location could be found, Remax Tower Realty on South Broadway has been established as the place where area kids can make their Christmas wishes to Santa.

As the meeting came to a close, Jerome Buening, President of the Commissioners, thanked Greensburg Mayor Gary Herbert for his attendance at meetings.

“It keeps the lines of communication open,” Herbert said.
