---- — GREENSBURG — The Greensburg-Decatur County Library will throw a free birthday party and carnival to celebrate 20 years at its current location from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 at the library, located at 1110 E. Main St.
Teen Librarian and Marketer Lori Durbin is coordinating the event.
“We’re celebrating 20 years in this building,” she said, “so we’re having a birthday party.”
The free event will include hot dogs, chips, drinks, popcorn and cotton candy, all provided free of charge.
“Everything will be paid for through vending machine profits and contributions from Friends of the Library,” Durbin said.
The event will also include a bounce house and a dunk tank, allowing attendees to line up for a chance to “dunk a librarian.”
“We’ll probably rotate one or two people in the dunk tank,” Durbin said. “Unless we decide to leave the director [Andrea Ingmire] in for the whole day.”
The four-hour event will also include crafts, prizes and “carnival-type games.” Games available to play will include a ring toss, a cakewalk, sidewalk chalk, kids tattoos and a “make and take” birthday craft.
“And of course there will be birthday cake,” Durbin added. “That’s being provided by the Decatur County Community Foundation.”
She continued, “The best thing about this event is that it’s free; no charge for anything.”
Durbin assured attendees that, although the celebration will be very kid-and-family friendly, there will also be displays for adults to enjoy, including a PowerPoint presentation regarding the history of both the library and the community.
“We’ll have some old photos out from the original Carnegie Library, too,” Durbin said, “and a model from when this building was designed.”
“So we welcome all of Decatur County to come out,” she continued, “wish us a happy birthday and have cake.”
Registration for the event isn’t required, Durbin added, but is requested to give organizers an idea of how much food to buy.
Registration can be completed by visiting www.bit.ly/18PnH1K and clicking on the Aug. 24 calendar grid. Or attendees can call the library at 663-2826 to register, or they register in person at the library, located at 1110 E. Main St.
