County schools report successful start to school year

GREENSBURG — The Decatur County Community School (DCCS) board met for their regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening.

During the meeting, the budget for 2014 was presented and permission was requested to advertise the budget. The budget itself will be approved or denied at a meeting later this month.

In a new district position as athletic director for both North and South Decatur schools, Willard Rice reported that all fall sports will be starting next week. Everything is in order, according to Rice, and there are no immediate obstacles to the beginning of the season for fall athletic teams.

Donnie Lewellyn, maintenance director for the county schools, gave a report on summer projects. South Decatur Elementary School (SDES) received a new basketball court in the gymnasium. The new floor, which includes both new wood and sealant, has been very well received by parents and students, as well as the staff of SDES.

Lewellyn also listen and thanked the individuals and businesses that donated either time and labor or monetary assistance to upgrade the county school facilities.

He continued to say that new goal posts on the practice fields at both county schools would be installed soon. In addition, new water lines will be installed to water the fields so that the grass won’t die in the event of a drought.

DCCS Superintendent Johnny Budd reported that the state awarded a waiver for the missed day of school at North Decatur schools due to the power outage. The missed day will not have to be made up later in the year.

Assistant Superintendent Mike Langevin gave a report about an upcoming professional development plan for teachers. A “new teacher roundtable” will be set up to allow first and second year teachers to have monthly meetings with school administration.

The purpose of the meetings will be to check on new teachers and ensure that they have enough support and everything needed to experience success early on in their teaching careers.
