Man, son found dead at city park Police investigating incident as murder-suicide

GREENSBURG – The Greensburg Police Department is investigating the deaths of a Rush County man and his son following the discovery of their bodies at the Greensburg City Park late Tuesday.

Greensburg Police Detective Bill Meyerrose said GPD officers were dispatched to the scene shortly before 11:30 Tuesday night. There they discovered the bodies of Gregory Hall, 44, and his son Tyler Hall, 14, inside a 2013 Silver Hyundai passenger car.

Meyerrose said the event is being investigated as a murder-suicide. Evidence indicates Gregory Hall fatally shot his son then turned the gun on himself. A handgun was found in the vehicle.

The tragic discovery ended a search that began late Tuesday when concerned family members contacted the Rush County Sheriff’s Department after being unable to reach Hall or his son. Hall had picked up Tyler from Greensburg Junior High School following the dismissal of school Tuesday afternoon. Meyerrose said Hall picking his son up from school was a normal occurrence.

Rush County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Terry Drake told the Daily News his department was contacted at approximately 10:30 p.m. Tuesday when family members were unable to reach Hall. Authorities were notified of the possibility that Hall might be traveling with his son. It was reported that family members were worried Hall had been experiencing suicidal tendencies or thoughts.

The RCSD issued a lookout alert to nearby authorities including the GPD shortly before 11 p.m. Drake said the RCSD attempted to track Hall via his cell phone. By tracking the phone, RCSD officials were able to pinpoint the location of Hall to the vicinity of the Greensburg City Park.

Meyerrose said GPD officers arrived at the park just before 11:30 p.m. and discovered the bodies of both individuals.

An autopsy was expected to be conducted Wednesday in Marion County.

Meyerrose said investigators have not been able to establish a motive for the incident as of Wednesday morning. Family members were notified late Tuesday and early Wednesday prior to the release of the names of the deceased.
