Greensburg — Three recent local high school graduates were each honored with $500 scholarships courtesy of the Greensburg Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).

The trio of students and FOP President Steve Snyder, a Decatur County Sheriff’s Deputy, stopped by the Daily News office Friday for a certificate presentation and a photo opportunity.

The honored students were Kaitlynn Scheidler of North Decatur Junior/Senior High School, Patrick Graue of South Decatur Junior/Senior High School, and Derek Chambers of Greensburg Community High School. The students were selected by a special committee of FOP members who look for students’ leadership skills, class rank, and their involvement in extracurricular activities and local organizations in making their selections. One student from each school earns the honor.

Deputy Snyder added that students exploring a future career in the field of law enforcement are given a bit of preference, though the scholarship is open to all student applicants.

“We’re looking for students who like to help and do things in the community,” Snyder said.

Patrick Graue and Derek Chambers will both be attending Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis this fall, majoring in Criminal Justice.

Kaitlynn Scheidler said she is undecided on what school she will attend, but mentioned she wishes to study Visual Communications in her college career.

The scholarship’s funds may be used for books or any other college expenses needed by the students.
