Pirates capture Hall of Fame Classic

McIntosh named Classic MVP

NEW CASTLE — Six months before the Greensburg boys basketball team began its state-championship journey last year, seniors Bryant McIntosh and Sean Sellers shared with the Daily News the goal that the basketball program wanted to achieve.

“I hope that next year we get to play in the Hall of Fame Classic,” said McIntosh last April. “We have a pretty good chance. It’ll be nice to go and get a chance to show who we are.” The Pirates had just concluded a 23-1 season that included an undefeated regular season and a sectional title.

One year, eight months and a state championship later, Greensburg fulfilled its goal with two big wins Saturday in the City Securities Hall of Fame Classic at New Castle’s Chrysler Fieldhouse.

The Pirates defeated Mt. Vernon (Fortville) 48-37 in the semifinal, and then topped seventh-ranked Columbus North 65-59 in the championship game.

Greensburg, the 31st school to win the boys classic, showed the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame that it relished its tournament invitation.

“We’re so thankful for being invited,” said head coach Stacy Meyer after the title game. “Our kids represented our school well. It was a total team win. I thought we competed very hard and well.”

The experience was even more special for McIntosh, who is Northwestern University bound. He described how it felt to return to the gymnasium where his basketball passion grew.

“It’s a phenomenal feeling,” said McIntosh. “I don’t know how to put it into words. To come back to the town that I grew up in and represent the community, it’s a dream come true.”

McIntosh also was named the Classic’s Most Valuable Player. He scored 27 points against Columbus North, including 18 in the first half.

Sellers was named to the All-Classic team, which included two players each from the other two teams that competed. Sellers scored 25 points in the two games, and added 13 rebounds.
