Tree County Players seek singers for next show

GREENSBURG – Tree County Players will hold auditions next week for their weather-delayed review of Stephen Sondheim songs.

The group is looking for up to three male and three female singers to perform 17 songs, mostly duets, said Jim Powell, director of the review, called “Marry Me a Little.”

Auditions will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 21, and 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 22 in Room 106 at the Decatur County Courthouse. Appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment, contact Powell at 593-7235 or 933-0846.

Powell said singers should be able to perform a song a cappella, but can bring sheet music as the group will have a keyboardist present. Powell said he will mostly be interested in the singer’s range and tone quality.

The group this week received permission from the Board of Works to perform the show, which will be in April, at City Hall.

Singers will perform the songs not as a musical with costumes, but as a series of songs, though they do tell a bittersweet story about two people who live on their own in an apartment complex, Powell said.

The songs were written by Sondheim, Powell said, but were never produced or dropped from the musicals for which they were written.

“It’s got some really good songs in there,” he said. “If you like any of the Sondheim shows … (this) will expand your knowledge of what he does.”

The works of Sondheim, an American composer and lyricist, include “West Side Story,” “A Little Night Music” and “Sweeney Todd.”

The show will include a dinner, though TCP President Dave Stults said that prices and the caterer had not yet been determined.

The Board of Works this week also approved street closings for the 5K runs/walks of Delta Lambda and On Eagle’s Wings.
