Decatur County EMA advises caution

Greensburg — The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Decatur County till 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13.

The NWS and local weather media are forecasting for snowfall of 1 to 3 inches in southern areas of Indiana including Decatur County by Friday morning. The worst conditions are anticipated late this evening and lasting through the overnight into the Friday morning commute.

Winds are expected between 10 to 20 MPH with gusts overnight up to 30 MPH. Air temperatures is expected to be at 13 degrees or lower, provided for sub-zero temperatures with wind chill. These winds will add to hazardous conditions allowing for the blowing and refreezing snow on cleared roadways and extreme temperatures. Drivers should be cautious and on alert for "glazed" roadways from ice that may form from this combination of blowing snow and low temperatures.

The current weather travel advisory level for Decatur County is Caution "White". Citizens should be cautious for changing conditions and prepare themselves and their vehicles before heading out on the roadways: fully charged cellular phones, blankets, and water for drinking should their vehicle become disabled. Citizens can receive free status changes alerts on their cellular phone by subscribing to NIXLE. Decatur County follows the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Weather Travel Advisory Conditions Guidelines. The advisories are color coded and the status of Decatur County can be found at www.in.gov/dhs

A condition may develop that limits or hinders travel in isolated areas. No travel restrictions have been placed in effect by county officials, but citizens should be alert to changing conditions

ÑAdvisory- Yellow

Routine Travel or activities may be restricted in areas because of a hazardous situation. Citizens should use caution or avoid these areas.

ÑWatch Ð Orange

Conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. Only essential travel is recommended (i.e., to and from work, emergency situations, etc.)

ÑWarning Ð Red

Travel may be restricted to emergency personnel only. Citizens are directed to remain from travel, comply with necessary emergency measures, cooperate and comply with directions of properly uniformed law enforcement officers.
