GJHS hosts “Cookies with Santa”

Greensburg Times

---- — GREENSBURG – This year, the combined efforts of the GJHS Track Team and FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) resulted in the first “Cookies with Santa” event at the school.

On a snowy Saturday, Dec. 14, athletes hosted a morning of fun and games for the young children in the area. Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance and listened to the many Christmas wishes the children shared.

It was the students’ mission to have candy and a small toy for every child that attended. Many of the athletes took it upon themselves to buy toys and gifts and arrange a variety of activities.

The group raised $500 from selling items from the junior high Wellness Cart after school, as well as collecting private donations.

Christmas and the holidays are a time for joy and laughter for children and it is difficult when one has added financial stress. The students at GJHS had a goal to add another great memory and lessen the burden on the parents a bit.

The student athletes spent the time interacting with the children. They decorated ornaments, played “pin the nose on the reindeer,” did face painting, and took pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

“I was very proud of all the students who worked so hard buying and wrapping gifts and giving up their Saturday morning. A special thank you goes to Principal Matt Clifford, his wife Ashley and his family. Thanks also go to Sonja Linville and Matt Slaven, teachers at GJHS who helped sponsor the event,” said Sue Burkhart, athletic coach and sponsor for the event.

Special contributions from Bill and Sandy Pratt; Prairie Farms; Greensburg Junior High School; Burkhart Automotive; Tim, Luke, and Austin Kane; Paul Davidson and Deb Smith.

Burkhart told the Daily News it was evident that the day of helping and giving to others had affected everyone and hopefully will inspire them to continue helping others for the rest of their lives.
