---- — GREENSBURG – Mother Nature’s New Year’s greeting of frigid temperatures and several inches of slippery snow led to multiple minor accidents and interstate slide-offs throughout the county Thursday.
Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen told the Daily News his department had received 14 reports of vehicle slide-offs on Interstate 74, none of which had resulted in injuries or damage.
The sheriff said the slide-offs involved multiple vehicles in various slick spots along I-74 from early Thursday morning and into the afternoon. Allen said most of the accidents involved vehicles leaving the roadway and coming to rest in ditches or in the median. Responding deputies and towing services were able to right the vehicles and send the motorists on their way, Sheriff Allen said.
In other areas of the county, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to minor weather-related accidents on State Road 3 North, State Road 46 at County Road 750 West and State Road 3 south of Westport.
One afternoon accident involved a rollover of a vehicle on I-74. Neither of the two occupants of that vehicle was injured, and they were able to leave the car on their own power.
Additionally, an early morning semi accident at the Petro Truck Stop was attributed to weather conditions.
Sheriff Allen said the quickly falling temperatures combined with accumulation of three to six inches of snow were the primary causes of the multiple minor accidents throughout the county.
Allen said previously cleared roadways had re-frozen throughout the day Thursday, and many county roads were covered in black ice, which is extremely slick and dangerous.
The sheriff encouraged drivers to operate their vehicles “well below the speed limit” during conditions such as those found throughout much of the state Thursday. Allen also cautioned motorists to be wary of blowing and drifting snow Friday.
At Daily News press time Thursday, the National Weather Service was predicting additional accumulation for the Decatur County area throughout the coming weekend.
News partner WISH-TV said temperatures will remain well below freezing over the next several days.
