Hickory Creek at Greensburg opened its doors to the public in celebration of 40 years of caring community service Saturday.
The event saw dozens of Decatur Countians take a trip through the newly remodeled nursing home facility, some of whom came away with prizes.
Guests were invited to travel from station-to-station Saturday afternoon, getting a glimpse of not only the four-decade-old facility’s brand new face lift, but also several of the faces providing care to residents there on a daily basis.
That latter aspect of Hickory Creek, said administrator Jim Hobbs, hasn’t changed a bit throughout the years.
“We want people to recognize that we’re all family here and we are truly as we say: neighbors taking care of neighbors,” said Hobbs.
Those neighbors receive care from a staff of about three dozen Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants each day. Described as a “skilled nursing facility,” Hobbs said his Hickory Creek staff offers residents assistance in three different forms of therapy and a multitude of other necessities. Those living at Hickory Creek may also visit a garden just outside the facility or watch a variety of birds living in a small aviary in the building’s lobby. Cards and bingo games are common, too.
Hickory Creek is further focused on helping residents deal with “culture change,” said Hobbs, the transition from living on one’s own to moving into a facility in which professional care and assistance are provided to help meet an individual’s needs.
“We want to keep their lives as close to how they were outside as possible,” noted Hobbs, who added his facility provides home-cooked meals — many of which can be chosen by the residents themselves — to those living there.
Saturday’s open house attempted to showcase these positive attributes while also injecting a little bit of celebratory birthday fun into the proceedings.
Guests who visited all stations within Hickory Creek had the opportunity to win a $500 gift card or one of two $50 cards at Walmart, a Decatur County Memorial Hospital gift bag, a $200 fall decoration or a Christmas lantern.
But aside from a tour and the chance to win some nifty prizes, Hobbs hopes the precedent of heartfelt care set by Hickory Creek staff throughout the last four decades will continue.
“We’re a small, family-oriented home,” said Hobbs. “Many of the residents feel like the staff are their family — and they’ve said so.”
