Greensburg — The Decatur County Historical Society (DCHS) is planning to host an ice cream social from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 25.

In a tradition dating back to the 18th century, the DCHS will be having an ice cream social to bring residents of Decatur County together for fun and games, and of course, delicious homemade ice cream.

And for those who've experienced them, it's not a stretch to say that ice cream socials are an event made better when accompanied by the whole family.

The event will take place at the Historical Society Museum, which is located at 222 N. Franklin Street, across the street from the post office. The building is a 160-year-old house that was purchased by the Historical Society in 1981 after an anonymous donation.

The museum features a collection of historical items related to Decatur County, as well as a variety of special exhibits through the year on loan from individuals. Tours will be running Saturday, and admission to the museum is always free.

Saturday’s event will be the first ice cream social hosted by the Historical Society, but if it is successful, they plan to make it an annual event.

The event itself, as well as the games and music, will be free of charge. The ice cream however, will be available for $2. Available flavors will be vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, and raspberry. There will also be an assortment of cookies for sale, two for one dollar.

Live music will be provided by “Scoop and the Guys” on the front porch of the museum. There will be a variety of games available for children, all of which are games Decatur County children would have played in the past. Games include a clothes pin drop, marbles, side walk chalk, and hopscotch.

In addition, the Historical Society will have copies of “Reflections... the History of Decatur County,” a coffee table style book with numerous pictures and historical information available for sale at a cost of $40. All money raised from the ice cream social and book sales will go directly back into the Historical Society, to either fund future events or for upkeep on the building and running the museum.

Saturday will be a great day for family-friendly fun in Greensburg. Stop in for a frozen treat at the ice cream social at the Historical Society and then walk over to square for the Fisher Adult Big Wheel 5 mile race around the courthouse in honor of Greensburg’s own Carl Fisher. One thing is certain, Saturday will be a busy day on the square with Greensburg residents celebrating the past in a variety of ways.
