Ziemke supports child wheelchair reimbursement

Greensburg Daily News

---- — INDIANAPOLIS – Senate Bill (SB) 397 co-sponsored by State Representative Cindy Ziemke (R-Batesville) passed out of the House this week and will now go back to the Senate.

SB 397 requires the Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning to reimburse nursing facilities for specialized or nonstandard wheelchairs for a child who lives in a nursing home.

“Only three nursing home facilities in Indiana serve the needs of children who have severe disabilities and need constant care and attention,” said Rep. Ziemke. “Their wheelchairs generally cost more than $4,000 and need to be replaced as they are outgrown or become too worn. I want to make sure these kids have what they need each and every day.”

Currently, nursing facilities can receive reimbursement from Medicaid for these wheel chairs, but prior authorization is required. Prior authorization is generally contingent upon the child being able to be rehabilitated which, in the case of these specific children, is unlikely.
