Shooting was an accident

GREENSBURG – Tuesday’s shooting death of a Greensburg teen has been ruled an accident.

Decatur County Coroner Charity Banks said Craig A. Roberts, 13, was killed by a single gunshot wound to his torso.

Roberts was struck by a bullet from a military-style assault rifle fired by a younger sibling Tuesday evening at their home in north-central Greensburg.

The rifle had been left out for cleaning, according to the Greensburg Police Department. Two adults were present in the home at the time of the shooting, police said.

Banks said Thursday that she has ruled the shooting to have been accidental based on the preliminary autopsy conducted in Marion County Thursday. Toxicology results will take four to six weeks.

Prosecutor Jim Rosenberry said that because the investigation is ongoing, he has not made a determination as to whether to file any criminal charges.

Roberts was a student at Greensburg Junior High School, where he was involved in drama groups, television production, the archery team and the school choir. He also was an inductee in the National Junior Honor Society.

The school and community are grieving the shooting death of a junior high school student for the second time in two weeks. Tyler Hall, 14, was shot to death by his father, Gregory Hall, Feb. 25 in a murder-suicide.

School officials said Wednesday that students were just beginning to come to terms with Hall’s death when they lost another friend.
