State police investigate death of Decatur County Jail inmate

GREENSBURG – A 38-year-old Greensburg resident died after he stopped breathing at the Decatur County Jail Monday evening.

Indiana State Police are investigating but suspect M. Shane Satterfield died of natural causes.

Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen said that he was called to the jail at about 6:15 p.m. because Satterfield was incoherent. Allen said that when he arrived, Satterfield could talk and look at him, but did not respond to commands.

Allen said he directed jail personnel to call medics and to place Satterfield into a wheelchair.

When five emergency responders arrived with an ambulance, Satterfield was “semi-conscious,” Allen said.

“All of a sudden, he quit breathing,” Allen said.

Emergency management technicians performed CPR and took Satterfield to Decatur County Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 7:20 p.m., Allen said.

ISP is handling the death investigation, which is standard procedure.

ISP Public Information Officer Noel Houze said results of an autopsy are pending, but Satterfield’s cause of death “appear to be natural causes of some kind.”

“There’s no indication of foul play (or) that he committed suicide,” Houze said.

Allen said the autopsy was to be performed Tuesday.

Satterfield was serving a 14-day sentence for drunk driving, Allen said. According to court documents, Satterfield had been arrested Dec. 31 on a felony charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and pleaded guilty on Thursday. The conviction was entered as a Class A misdemeanor.

Satterfield had been in jail since Thursday. Allen said he was not aware of any medical issues before Monday night.

Satterfield lived on Tara Road in Greensburg with his mother, who declined to comment. According to Satterfield’s Facebook page, he was an alumnus of Hauser Junior/Senior High School and liked motorsports, the TV show “Big Bang Theory” and musicians James Taylor, the Charlie Daniels Band and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He had 463 Facebook friends. His profile photo showed his dog.
