---- — The North Decatur girls basketball team opened the season with a 50-24 win over Union County.
The Lady Chargers led from start to finish, shut down the Lady Patriots with a stifling defense, and benefited from eight different scorers.
“We did some good things and some bad things,” said Bryant. “We really try to take pride in what we do defensively.”
North led 24-13 at the half and held Union County to 11 second-half points. Seniors Anna Wallpe (14) and Alison Wallpe (13) combined to outscore Union County’s team output. Sophomore Mary Hughes followed with 11. Senior Emma Geis scored four points. Senior Andrea Volk scored three early points, while seniors Abby Lamb and Myra Steele each added two. Freshman Olivia Siefert chipped in one.
Union County committed 29 turnovers, seven of which were the result of a North steal. Bryant was pleased that North was able to create numerous deflections and steals.
“I like the activeness that we have on defense,” said Bryant. “Our kids are working on the things we’ve never worked on before.”
North committed 21 turnovers itself.
“We’ll clean things up offensively,” he said. “Those are things we can clean.”
Bryant said he was pleased to see both the starters and bench players give a complete effort for 32 minutes, particularly on defense.
“I really felt like we got good minutes out of everybody,” he said. “A lot of energy.”
