Lady Pirates fall to Grizzly Cubs

The Greensburg girls basketball team fell to Franklin 69-39 in the season opening game Friday on the road.

The hosts limited Greensburg’s returning scorers well below their averages, and last season’s pair of All-Conference players scored a combined nine points.

Greensburg (0-1) trailed 20-13 after the first quarter and 34-17 at the half. The Grizzly Cubs pulled away with a 19-12 run, and outscored the Lady Pirates 16-10 in the final eight minutes.

Junior Abbey Denton led Greensburg with 13 points. Sophomore Taylor McIntosh followed with seven, while sophomores Keauna Schultz and Maddi Hellmich each added five. Scoring two points apiece were senior Joanna Redelman and juniors Jessica Banaschak, Chelsea Hersley and Megan Schmidt.

The Greensburg junior varsity squad fell 46-12 in the first game. Freshman Sydney Meyer led her team with five points. Savannah Harrison followed with three points. Sophomore Kate Porter scored two, while freshmen Gabby Burton and Calla Black each added one.

The Lady Pirates return to the court Tuesday (tonight) against visiting Shelbyville.
