Lady Pirate kickers bow out in sectional, 3-2

The Greensburg girls soccer team concluded its 2013 season with a 3-2 loss to No. 13 ranked Triton Central Tuesday at the Centerville Sectional.

The Lady Tigers struck first scoring off a direct kick with 22 minutes to play in the first half. The Lady Tigers took the 1-0 advantage to halftime despite the Lady Pirates outshooting the Lady Tigers 8-7.

Eight minutes into the second half, senior Sydney Wettering found the net off an assist from senior Morgan Stagge to tie the game.

At the 19-minute mark, freshman Michaela Myers fed Wettering for her second goal and the 2-1 advantage. At the 9-minute mark, despite several defenders trying to stop her, state scoring leader and Xavier recruit Samantha Dewey netted the equalizer. Dewey found the net again two minutes later for the game winner.

The Lady Pirates were unable to mount many offensive attacks late as Triton Central maintained possession late. The Lady Pirates did outshoot the Lady Tigers 18-14 on the game. With the loss, the Lady Pirates finish 3-9-5 on the season.

Junior Cara Zeigler again played a solid game in goal, according to head coach Mike Myers, making 11 saves.

Players taking shots on goal were: Stagge, Myers, Wetting, sophomore Maddi Hellmich, freshman Emma Overmyer, and sophomore Abby Bausback.

Coach Myers applauded sophomore Kasey Moeller on her defense of Dewey as she was assigned the task of covering her on two straight games.

“Sophomore Kasey Moeller did another outstanding job shadowing and marking Dewey all night, and many players had solid efforts all night,” said Coach Myers. “All around this was the best game all year and it is sad to see the season end, especially for seniors Sydney Wettering, Morgan Stagge, and Janean Smith. It took one great player to beat us tonight and unfortunately we could not keep her out of the net. Also, a big thank you to all our fans, support staff and parents for their support this season; the coaches and team appreciate all that you have done for the Lady Pirates soccer team.”
