Prom dress sale a success

GREENSBURG -- Students from all three local high schools will look their best this prom season thanks to the efforts of a Greensburg Community High Schooler’s Chautauqua project.

Kalynne Asche began organizing the Greensburg/Decatur County “Once Upon a Prom” dress drive earlier this year, and her efforts culminated in multiple successful sale dates at First Baptist Church. Saturday capped off the project and gave last minute shoppers the opportunity to get a deal on new or gently used prom dresses just in time for the big events this spring.

Kalynne said approximately 230 dresses had been donated or sold for the project, which was started to help ease the financial burden of purchasing the perfect dress or gown for the most important high school formal dance each year -- a significant though expected expense that annually falls on students, and by extension their parents.

The project, according to all involved, was quite the success story.

A total amount of earnings wasn’t available Saturday, but Kalynne was pleased with the prospects of the tally which will be divided among the after-prom programs of Greensburg Community High School, North Decatur High School and South Decatur High School.

The first sale date in March brought in the most shoppers, the student said, and although the event was largely targeted at teen patrons there were some surprises along the way.

Lisa Asche, Kalynne’s mother who lent a helping hand to her daughter’s community service endeavor, said students from Indianapolis and the Jac-Cen-Del and Milan school systems made the trip to the Tree City to check out the wares Kalynne had collected. All were surprised when a young bride-to-be looking for the perfect wedding dress stopped by First Baptist and found exactly the garment she was looking for among the racks set out in the church’s Family Life Center.
