Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

On behalf of Campaign Chairs Lora and Tim Williams and the Decatur County United Fund’s board and staff, I would like to thank the community for its tremendous support of the 2013 United Fund auction.

The boogie nights theme was set by our decorating crew, JoAnn & Doug Fry, Brenda Miller, Sheila Elam, Mary Speer, Rebecca Myers, Sarah Green, Doug Bohman, Linda Weigel, Michael Nahmias and Jere’ Sturges. The fine feast for the evening was courtesy of The Pines and their marvelous wait staff. Our emcee, Larry Rueff, and auctioneers Steve Fortner, David Giddings, and Brian Owens, orchestrated some lively bidding from the approximately 300 in attendance.

Cashiers Mary Lou Davis, Theresa Schutte, Connie Weston and clerks Wanda Fortner and Ginny Whipple worked long into the night to ensure everyone went home with their purchases. Those items had been acquired over the last 4 months, and showcased at the auction, thanks to the talented acquisition committee of Lizette Bell, Joyce Denton, Dave Jarvis, Sarah Nahmias, Sandy Nieman, Gail Rueff, Joe Rust, and Jim & Jere’ Sturges. Lending a helping hand during the evening were volunteers Stephanie Bower and Kay Nobbe.

Our efficient ticket sales were managed by Kristy Lowe with assistance from Lynne Bewley. The Knights of Columbus provided a wonderful facility and were gracious hosts. Coaches Stacy Meyer and Kyle Nobbe and the GCHS and NDHS boys’ basketball teams, respectively, provided welcome manpower during set up and tear-down.

Many, many businesses donated to the event. Numerous hands also helped with the planning and decorating. Hundreds of bidders came out in force. After an exciting evening of gracious bidding and finalizing the numbers, the 2013 auction netted $73,418. It was the support of the entire community that made for a very successful and profitable evening for the agencies being funded by the United Fund in 2014.
