Cougar spikers 4-1 in conference

The South Decatur varsity volleyball team improved to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference with a five-set win over Eastern Hancock.

The Lady Cougars beat their Mid-Hoosier Conference rivals 25-121, 25-22, 25-12.

“Great conference win to take us to 4-1 in the conference,” said head coach Lisa Bennett. “The girls played a consistent game, not quite the fast paced game that we are capable of, but consistent enough to win the game.”

Bennett applauded an overall “great night” from senior Julia Miller. She served 11-for-11 with seven points, 12-for-14 hitting with five kills, tallied two block-kills at the net and picked up 12 digs.

Bennett noted that senior Clarissa Baltus also tallied some “great all-around numbers.” Baltus hit 15-for-16 with three kills, served 8-for-8 with four points and added seven digs.

Senior Ashley Johannigman also produced a good night at the net, according to Bennett. Johannigman hit 19-for-22 with eight kills and chipped in two block-kills at the net.

Junior Megan Niese recorded eight digs.

“Megan Niese had a good nights picking up the ball,” said Bennett. Niese also hit 7-for-8 with a kill and served 17-for-19 with 13 points and an ace.

Senior Courtney Billingsley had “a great night serving as well,” serving 14-for-15 from behind the line and contributing nine points for the team.

Junior Brittany Koors hit 9-for-10 with two kills and led the team in assists with 14. She chipped in five aces and nine points serving and added four digs.

Junior Olivia Watkins hit 2-for-2, chipped in an assist and tallied two digs. Anekah Bower hit 2-for-2 and picked up a dig, while Mariah Green hit 1-for-1 and added a dig.
