---- — WESTPORT – Every year, South Decatur Elementary School (SDES) hosts a Kindergarten Social with all the classes to allow students to get to know the people they will one day graduate alongside.
SDES has four kindergarten classes, taught by Nancy Wamsley, Jessi McConnell, Laura Johnson and Lisa Wolterman. All four teachers and Principal Kara Holdsworth gathered in the school’s cafeteria Thursday evening to welcome students and their families.
The entire group was served cookies and lemonade while the teachers explained why everyone was assembled. The annual Kindergarten Social is a chance for all the SDES kindergarten students to meet the other kids in their grade, from all four classrooms.
The teachers encouraged students to get to know the other children, even if they weren’t in the same classroom, because they would be classmates for the next 12 years. Parents were also encouraged to greet one another and learn about the families of their child’s classmates.
After finishing their snacks, the whole assembly was dismissed to visit various locations around the school, including individual classrooms and the gymnasium. In the classrooms, students were able to show off aspects of their daily school life, including artwork on the walls, favorite toys and desks.
Some classes had activities for the families to complete together, as well as photo slideshows of the children in class. Students appeared to be delighted to be the center of attention and happily greeted their fellow kindergarteners.
The SDES Kindergarten Social seems to have been a smash hit with students and families. Promoting friendship and familiarity among students that will be grouped together for the next 12 years is a healthy idea that could potentially reduce bullying and lead to a happy, close-knit class of 2025.
