Letts Township in Decatur County hopes to have its new Fire Station constructed and ready for operation sometime in 2013.
In a brief phone interview Monday afternoon, Letts Fire Chief Matt Morrow told the Daily News he hopes construction will begin on the new structure in the spring.
“We’re going to open bids sometime in March,” Morrow said.
Morrow described the project’s current phase as its “design and engineering phase.”
The Letts Fire Department (LFD) will have two sizable grants from which to draw funds for the project — one for $400,000 from the State Department of Rural Affairs and one for around $25,000 from the Decatur County Community Foundation.
Morrow nonetheless anticipates the LFD needing a sizable loan to pay the balance.
“I can only make a best-guess estimate,” he said. “But based on the budget of the Millhousen project and those of other fire departments in the area, we anticipate a loan of roughly $300,000.”
That money, Morrow added, will be borrowed from Napoleon State Bank.
He clarified, too, that the amount could be less depending on how competitive bidding for the project becomes.
“Some of the cost will be determined by how badly the contractors want the job,” he said.
