Crash claims life of Jennings County woman

WESTPORT – The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department (DCSD) is investigating a fatal car accident that occurred Monday night in rural Decatur County.

According to a press release from Sheriff Greg Allen, the DCSD received a call from a homeowner at 7712 West County Road 480 South at approximately 9 p.m. Monday.

The homeowner stated he was chasing a vehicle from his home due to the occupants of the vehicle having allegedly trespassed on his property. The property holds a vacant rental home from which the occupants recently relocated. There were still items in the home and the suspects allegedly kicked in the back door during an attempted burglary, according to Sheriff Allen.

Sheriff Allen said the homeowner noticed the suspects’ activity from his own home on the property and went to the rental house to confront the suspects. Immediately after being confronted, the suspects, one male and one female, got in their vehicle and sped off down County Road 700 West. The suspects’ vehicle was reported to be traveling at a high rate of speed and disregarding traffic signs, according to the caller.

The homeowner also reported the male suspect was pointing a rifle out of the passenger window at him. Westport Town Marshal Joe Talkington observed the suspects’ vehicle and attempted to stop it by blocking the roadway at the intersection of County Road 1100 South and County Road 700 West. At this time, the homeowner stopped his pursuit of the suspects’ automobile.

The vehicle failed to stop, driving into the ditch to avoid the Marshal, and proceeded southbound on County Road 700 West at a high rate of speed. The vehicle disregarded the stop sign at the intersection of State Road 3 and continued southbound on County Road 700 West.

At that point, Marshal Talkington lost sight of the vehicle but continued southbound in an attempt to locate it. Sheriff Allen told the Daily News that Talkington checked several driveways and pull-off spots in case the suspects had pulled over to hide. He reportedly didn’t see taillights in any other direction and continued south in search of the suspects’ vehicle.
