Healthcare Clinic Provides For Those In Need

Greensburg — With the falling economy and recent layoffs, Darci Myers, Director of the Community Healthcare Clinic in Decatur County, says the need for their facility is greater than ever.

For those who have no medical insurance and/or are low income, the clinic can provide medical and dental care. Patients can receive physical exams, treatment of minor illnesses and chronic diseases as well as routine dental cleanings, fillings and extractions.

Myers said, in the last six months, many of the facility's patients are in their late 50's, people who have been laid off recently and whose unemployment benefits have expired.

"A lot of them have a history of medical problems," she said. "It's been sad to see."

Prospective patients will see nurse practitioners and doctors who volunteer their time.

Of the two days a week the clinic is open, nurse practitioners are available Tuesdays and Thursdays while the doctors who volunteer are only available on Thursdays.

Through grants from United Fund, as well as funding from the county and donations from individuals and churches, the clinic has moved to a new location at 415 E. Montgomery Road, Greensburg: a yellow house on the Decatur County Memorial Hospital property.

The clinic is also full of medical equipment bought with grants and funds; however, some of the items are hand-me-downs from other medical facilities.

Even with the new facility, the equipment and the volunteer time of medical personnel, Myers said there are still a lot of people who need to be helped.

"The demand is there," she said. "A lot of people are really hurting. We just want them to know that we're here. The wait can be little long some days, but we'll help them."

Those who need the services of the clinic must meet income guidelines, have little to no insurance and must be residents of Decatur County.

For those who would like to set up an appointment or contribute to the cause in any way, contact the clinic at 663-7707.
