YMCA receives donation

Greensburg — Tuesday afternoon, Greensburg’s chapter of Delta Theta Tau Sorority presented dual checks to the Decatur County Family YMCA, one for $1000 and the other for $800.

The donations come from proceeds earned during the sorority’s Second Annual Vera Bradley Bingo Night, Oct. 18. The total proceeds from that event were $3,663.

According to YMCA CEO Diane Hart-Dawson, the $1,000 check will fund the YMCA’s Invest in Youth Program, while the $800 check will be used to buy new computers that will support three critical YMCA youth-oriented programs: The Lego Robotics Program, the After School Program and the Pre-school Program.

Current Delta Theta Tau President Shelly Hellmich said, “Our sorority is very partial to helping kids. The YMCA offers opportunities, resources and programs to many children who might not otherwise be able to afford them. We consider this money a sound investment in Decatur County. Our children are the future.”

Kathy Moore, Delta Theta treasurer, added, “Technology is expanding so quickly these days, and if kids don’t get a solid start with it, they fall behind very quickly. So many kids miss out on going to pre-school because of funding; my daughter-in-law teaches Kindergarten, and she tells me that the level of knowledge between kids who go to pre-school and those who don’t is amazing.”

Ed Fox is on the Decatur County YMCA Board of Directors and is chairman of Invest in Youth.

“This money will fund scholarships for multiple YMCA youth programs,” Fox said. In example, Fox cited the Y’s Youth Football and Soccer Programs, but added there are many others.

“We don’t turn anyone away for financial reasons,” he continued, “and money from donations like this help keep that goal a reality, so we’re extremely grateful to Delta Theta.”

Hart-Dawson agreed. “I want to extend a huge thanks to Delta Theta Tau for their support. Their generosity helps us live and deliver our mission here at the Y.”

Hart-Dawson added that the sorority’s donation also pushes the YMCA Invest in Youth Program past its $64,000 fundraising goal for 2012.

“Our original goal for 2012 was $62,000,” she said. “Our ‘stretch’ goal was $64,000. This puts us close to $65,000.”
