Family fun at Covered Bridge Festival

WESTPORT – Since 2002, Westport has hosted the annual Covered Bridge Festival, providing a fun-filled family friendly day for both children and adults.

This year’s event looks to be no different. The 2014 Westport Covered Bridge Festival will take place Saturday, June 14, at the historic covered bridge just outside town. The full day of entertainment and events will begin with Breakfast on the Bridge from 8 to 10 a.m.

The Westport Kiwanis Club prepares a variety of delicious breakfast foods each year, which participants can enjoy while dining on the covered bridge. The club’s biscuits and gravy have been a favorite for many years, though others foods will be offered as well. There is no cost for the breakfast, but a freewill offering will be in place and donations fund future community events.

The Covered Bridge Festival parade begins at 10 a.m. and will leave from the Westport Community Building on Main Street. The parade will head down Main Street and through town toward the Westport dam park area, which is in view of the covered bridge. The parade route is roughly two and a half miles and prime viewing spots will be available along the route.

At the conclusion of the parade, there will be an antique tractor show in the dam park area. In addition to the pieces of machinery from days gone by, many owners will be on hand to answer questions about the equipment.

The Duckling Derby is slated to begin around 11 a.m., though it may start later if the parade takes longer than expected. The Ducking Derby is an annual event where tickets match a number printed on the bottom of rubber ducks, which will be dumped into Sand Creek. The ducks “race” down the creek to the dam park, where the first three to cross the finish line bring cash prizes to their owners.
