GREENSBURG – More than 400 groups and individuals from the far reaches of the county to across the rest of the country have signed on for this year’s Big Brothers-Big Sisters (BBBS) summer fundraiser.
Christened the “Color Fun Run 5K,” the fundraiser begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at Rebekah Park and will see participants splashed with every color of the rainbow as they walk, run or jog the length of the trail.
The fun run takes the place of BBBS’ previous fundraising effort, the annual “Run for Kids’ Sake.” Last year’s event drew approximately 40 participants in total – a number eclipsed 10 times over with the event still a day away.
BBBS AIM Coordinator Katie Stoffel said she and her organization are “pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed” a t the unprecedented response. Funds earned through runner registrations are used to back a variety of local programs intended to mentor children.
Saturday’s “Color Fun Run” follows a more traditional 5K that begins at 8:30 a.m. The fun run will have various “color stations” where participants will be doused with red, orange, blue, green and pink substances, all in the name of fun. Runners will be able to visit water stations throughout the run. They can also snack on fruit and hot dogs while enjoying music in the park, Stoffel said.
The outpouring of support has led BBBS to offer t-shirt pickups from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at Rebekah Park. Stoffel said additional t-shirts may be available for purchase Saturday, but only early registrants are guaranteed to receive a shirt.
The first group to register has included many local residents, but Stoffel said some participants have come from as far away as Oklahoma and Florida.
“We saw the excitement building,” Stoffel commented. “The t-shirts have been delivered, we’ve got our posters and signs, and the color has been delivered, too … we appreciate all the help and support.”
