GREENSBURG – A violent incident at a Lake McCoy residence led to the injury of five people and the arrest of a Decatur County man Sunday afternoon.
Decatur County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Derek S. Decker, 18, of the 900 block of South Lake McCoy Drive Sunday, following allegations he hit a juvenile in the head with a cell phone, slapped a 12-year-old girl in the face and assaulted his mother and her boyfriend at her residence.
Decker was charged Monday in the Decatur Circuit Court with felony battery and strangulation as well as two misdemeanor battery charges.
According to court documents, police were called to the home of Micki Hughes shortly before 3 p.m. by her boyfriend, Nathaniel Harmeyer.
Hughes told investigators the incident began when Decker hit a female child in the face with a cell phone, angering that child’s 12-year-old friend. Decker then allegedly slapped that female child in the face and began shouting at others in the home.
When Hughes, who is Decker’s mother, asked her son to leave the residence, he is alleged to have refused and then shoved her. Hughes told police Decker placed his forearm on her throat which impeded her ability to breathe.
Hughes called Harmeyer for help, who entered the residence and threw Decker to the ground. A scuffle ensued with Harmeyer attempting to restrain the alleged assailant.
Harmeyer alleged Decker hit him in the face which prompted an emergency call to police. Harmeyer then took items in the home belonging to Decker and placed them outside of the residence. Hughes said Decker also caused damage at the home by kicking holes in the wall and throwing things.
Sheriff’s Deputies discovered Decker sitting in a chair outside the front of Hughes’ residence, bleeding from a head injury he sustained when Harmeyer threw him to the floor of the home.
