---- — A Lake Santee man was airlifted from the scene of a rural motorcycle accident Friday afternoon after suffering fractures and head injuries.

According to a report from Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen, Paul Menkedick, 54, was southbound on CR 880 East on a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle when he left the roadway, for reasons unknown, and crashed into a ditch.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:05 p.m. on County Road 880 East, not far from County Road 500 North, west of Lake Santee.

Emergency responders from Decatur County EMS, the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Department and the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene and found Menkedick unconscious in the ditch. He had suffered head injuries and fractures to his left arm.

Menkedick was flown from the scene by StatFlight helicopter to the University of Cincinnati Hospital for treatment. His condition was not known at press time.

Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Rohr is in charge of the investigation., and neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to have been a factor. Investigators said Menkedick was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

“I’m a proponent of wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle,” Allen said. “If you get thrown off of a motorcycle or motorbike, you’ve got a good chance of hitting your head and getting injured.” The sheriff emphasized that injuries in accidents such as this are typically worse when the rider is not wearing a helmet. There is no law in the state of Indiana requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets while riding.
