Soil and Water offering trees to benefit animal shelter

Greensburg — For the fifth year in celebration of Arbor Day and Earth Day, at 9 a.m. April 20, approximately 1,000 Red Oak, Bald Cyprus, Flowering Dogwood, and Tulip Trees will be given away by Decatur County Soil and Water.

And some of this year's beneficiaries of the tree exchange may, in fact, have something to "bark" about.

“We’re very excited to partner with the Decatur County-Greensburg Animal Shelter this year,” said Jenna Nicholson, district coordinator of Soil and Water.

Last year Soil and Water’s requested donations went to Bread of Life.

While donations are not mandatory to receive trees, Soil and Water is asking for Purina (Original Dog Chow and Pedigree Dog Chow; 4Health brand cat food (both indoor formula and cat/kitten) from Tractor Supply; collars of all sizes but especially small and medium; slip leads; clumping cat litter; Frontline and/or Advantage flea control; Pedialyte (unflavored, no coloring) dog poop bags; 33 gallon and 13 gallon trash bags; Simple Green for cleaning; paper towels; vinyl gloves size large; or cash donations.

All donations will go to the local animal shelter.

The trees are only available for Decatur County residents, and the giveaway has a limit of five trees per person. The giveaway is conducted on a first come, first served basis.

“We just want to make sure we can replace all the trees people use,” Nicholson said of the giveaway, “We’ve lost a lot of trees from different storms. We want to make sure Decatur County is a ‘tree city’ and make sure there’s trees around to enjoy in the future.”

The Decatur County Soil and Water Conservation District is located at 1333 N. Liberty Circle E, and can be contacted at 812-663-8685, ext. 3.
