The annual Decatur County Relay for Life Purple Tie Ball brought around 110 people dressed in their best tuxedos and dance dresses.
With splashes of purple decking the walls of the Eagle’s Club, people ate, danced and bid on silent auction items to help fundraise for the upcoming Relay for Life, scheduled for June 21 and 22.
“It’s important to me to watch everyone come together, “ said Vickie Emberton, chairwoman of the Decatur County Relay for Life.
This year’s theme was “fighting back against cancer,” complete with a fighting ring set as a dance floor, and boxing gloves as table decorations. Emberton said the Relay seeks to help find solutions to controllable risk factors for cancer such as obesity and smoking.
She said the presence of many junior high students at this year’s ball was encouraging, “We know that our young people are aware and concerned,” said Emberton.
The Relay for Life symbolizes the journey of a cancer patient over 24 hours, with the sunset beginning a journey into the dark, and hope for a cure with the rising dawn.
