Second annual candlelight vigil set for Saturday

Devin Parsons remembered, child abuse highlighted

Greensburg — The second annual Devin Lee Parsons Candlelight Vigil is set for Saturday night at Greensburg’s North Park.

As was the case last year, this year’s remembrance ceremony will feature a variety of speakers who will not only pay homage to the slain Greensburg boy, but also attempt to raise awareness of child abuse in the Decatur County community and beyond.

According to event organizers, presentations will be given by Mayor Gary Herbert, Clarksburg Covenant Church Pastor Dave Steidel, Prevent Child Abuse Indiana’s Sandy Runkoe, and Teresa Hoeing of Decatur County 4 Kids. New Directions, an affiliate of the Devin Lee Parsons Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Foundation, will also provide a guest speaker.

The free event begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and is expected to last about an hour.

Last year, children and adults from across the community gathered at the park and lit candles in remembrance of the thousands of lives lost each year to child abuse. Balloons were also launched as reminders of the many tragic deaths.

The event was once again organized by four great-uncles of Devin Parsons, a 12-year-old boy who was beaten to death by his mother and her boyfriend in June 2011. Following Devin’s death, his relatives set up the Devin Lee Parsons Child Abuse and Domestic Violence Foundation, a non-profit aimed at raising awareness of all manner of violence in the home.

The vigil comes just before the calendar turns to April, recognized nationwide as Child Abuse Awareness Month.

But the candlelight ceremony is far from the only community event planned in Devin Parsons’ name this year.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 27, the Greensburg Knights of Columbus Hall will host a benefit dance aimed at assisting June’s annual “Devin Lee Parsons: Never Be Forgotten Ride.” Advance tickets for the dance are $10; tickets sold the day of will cost $15. The fundraising dance will feature music by the Mystic River Band, and is expected to last until midnight.

The motorcycle ride is set for June 22, and will culminate in a night of music, food and a silent auction at the Knights of Columbus Hall. That same night, the Knights’ “Super Raffle” will feature a drawing for a 2013 Harley Davidson Heritage Soft Tail motorcycle or $15,000. Tickets for the raffle are on sale now and can be obtained by contacting Knight of Columbus member Eric Capper at 812-663-2607 or 812-614-1687. Tickets for the raffle cost $100 each.
