Indiana Conservation officers are investigating an ATV accident that resulted in injuries to a Decatur County man Wednesday evening on County Road 1050 West.
According to a press release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Jacob P. Benefiel, 20, was injured shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday after crashing the ATV he was operating.
Witnesses told investigators Benefiel was operating the ATV at “an extremely high rate of speed,” when he struck a dirt berm causing the vehicle to be launched into the air. The ATV landed on its front wheels, and Benefiel was thrown over the handlebars into the ground. The ATV then rolled over Benefiel, rendering him unconscious.
The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, Decatur County EMS and local fire units responded to the scene. Benefiel was airlifted and transported to Methodist Hospital for treatment of his injuries. No information on his condition was immediately available.
Investigators believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the incident.
