Greensburg — At their regular meeting Monday morning, the Decatur County Commissioners approved the purchase of a van by the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department (DCSC) for use as a mobile emergency unit.

The van, currently owned by the Greensburg-Decatur County Public Library and used as a mobile bookmobile, will be sold for $1,000.

According to DCSC Lt. Deputy Rob Duckworth, the van will be “repurposed” for around $12,000 into a “mobile emergency unit.”

“We anticipate this unit will last for several years,” Duckworth told the commissioners. “It will give us the ability to provide on-scene support to emergency responders.

According to Duckworth, to date, the library-owned vehicle has been kept indoors, accounting for its excellent condition.

Duckworth admitted, however, that DCSC facilities are inadequate to store the vehicle indoors, and commissioners expressed interest in eventually finding proper storage to extend the vehicle’s life.

Also on Monday, the commissioners agreed to the Decatur County EMS’s plan to re-station two of its older ambulances, with one going to Clarksburg and one to Westport.

The ambulances became available with the recent Commissioner-approved EMS purchase of both a re-mounted and a new ambulance.

DCEMS Director Doug Banks said the two vans going to Clarksburg and Westport have too many miles to be of much value as trade-ins or to sell.

However, Banks added, both vehicles are still dependable enough and in good enough shape to serve as first responders to Clarksburg and Westport. In inclement winter weather, Greensburg ambulances might need an hour or more to reach those areas.

“We think these ambulances are still in plenty good enough shape to potentially save lives,” Banks said, “by being first on scene, providing assistance until Greensburg units arrive.

The Commissioners also recognized Decatur Countian Albert Friend for “outstanding services to the veterans of Decatur County.” Friend is a longtime veterans advocate who currently serves area veterans in several capacities, including as volunteer driver of the county’s free-of-charge van that shuttles veterans back and forth to Indianapolis for VA medical services.

The next regular meeting of the Decatur County Commissioners will be at 8 a.m., Jan. 2, 2013.
