Final draft of sign ordinance to be pushed

Greensburg — During the regularly scheduled City of Greensburg Plan Commission meeting Tuesday, the final draft of the long-debated sign ordinance was agreed upon.

Commission president, Glenn Tebbe, was renominated as president, and Blake O’Mara was nominated as vice chair.

John Nieman has been appointed secretary to fill the recently abandoned position.

The plan commission re-reviewed changes made to the sign ordinance last month. Some of the changes had not been included, but are planned to be inserted into the final draft.

A large point of discussion was if not-for-profits should have to pay for a permit to hang signs. The general consensus was no, but the group then questioned what factors constitute a not-for-profit?

The commission can not always determine this by zoning ordinances, they said.

The commission agreed with Chris Stephen, city attorney, that the commission can reserve the right to review whether or not a business is not-for-profit.

Aside from some lingering formatting issues, future illustrations, and definitions which need to be added, the sign ordinance has been deemed ready to present to the Greensburg Common Council and the public.

Tebbe said the commission could continue to nit-pick the ordinance, and that the commission has done their best.

Tebbe expressed that he would prefer to show the public the ordinance before giving it to the City Council, but did not provide a preferred date.

He decided that the date would be announced at next month’s meeting.

Several houses were added to the list of unsafe houses, two of which are expected to be eventually condemned, and several of which are abandoned and have broken windows.
