Chargers take court for unfinished business

---- — The North Decatur boys basketball team, one year removed from a sectional championship, returns just one of its five starters from last season’s sectional tournament lineup.

Despite losing five seniors to graduation, and the return of less than a half dozen players who saw regular varsity time down the stretch, the Chargers are capable of doubling last year’s win total of six. North went 6-17, but won the first two sectional games to advance to the championship.

Despite a rare season without seniors on the roster, the sophomores and juniors have shown the coaches that they are ready to step into major roles this season.

Of North’s top eight players, six are sophomores.

“I really like the kids that we have coming back,” said Nobbe. “I have some experience coming back, even though we’re going to be fairly young. Of those six, quite a few of them were able to get some varsity experience last year, which is really great. Hopefully it will be beneficial for us this year. Some of those other kids that didn’t were successful and contributed to our JV team. Even though we are young, it’s nice coming in this year to have a lot of kids who understand our system offensively and defensively. It’s not just a teaching of all new things. It’s more of a re-teaching, so that’s nice to see.”

With the pieces coming together for the Chargers, North is aiming for a return to the sectional championship game and a shot to settle unfinished business.

More in-depth team analysis and a preview of all players will be published Tuesday.
