---- — During the pep rally for the presentation of the Greensburg boys basketball team’s Class 3A State Championship trophy, head coach Stacy Meyer recalled being asked about a repeat this season.

“I can tell you that going into next season, this season won’t even be mentioned to these guys,” Meyer recalled saying.

The 13th-year head coach begins his eighth year at Greensburg with a humble attitude regarding the Pirates’ new season.

“The day-to-day of getting better is our concern,” he said. “We haven’t won a game yet this year. We’re 0-0. We’re not going to look behind. We’re going to look forward. We have a lot of challenges that are ahead of us.”

Still, it’s hard to ignore the No. 1 preseason ranking of a squad that returns all five of its starters – including four senior starters.

Meyer emphasized the returning experience will be a big factor in Greensburg’s success and fulfilling its goals. The Pirates want to win the Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference outright and win a sectional championship on its home court.

“Every year you go into a season, obviously you want to win every basketball game, but your big picture is, you want to win your conference and you want to compete to win a sectional championship,” said Meyer. That’s what we’re shooting for again.

The Pirates’ biggest asset this season is their leadership.

“We don’t have one leader on this team,” said Meyer. “Collectively, as a group we have leaders, and our kids have handled that very well. They hold each other accountable. When you have older kids now, they know expectations, and they hold not only themselves, but each other accountable. They’ve done that in the offseason as well, so I think that will be very beneficial.”

More in-depth team analysis and a preview of all players will be published Tuesday.
