---- — GREENSBURG – A week of Hawaiian-themed fun at Morning Breeze Retirement Community and Health Care Center closed Friday afternoon with the recognition of this year’s “Shining Star” award.

The annual honor was earned this year by LPN Beke Abel, a seven-year Morning Breeze veteran who was happily surprised by colleagues and residents with an award that was, by all accounts, well deserved.

“She is an extraordinary person and clinician who optimizes nursing at its best,” Morning Breeze executive director Holly Cole said.

“She serves as the ultimate resident advocate and is known for her high standard of performance.”

The Shining Star award is the name of Morning Breeze’s employee of the year award recipient.

For the unanticipated recognition Friday, Abel said she was “humbled” and cited her patients as the best part of her job.

For those patients, the seasoned nurse is known for going above and beyond the call of duty.

“Beke is known to offer companionship to residents who have sleepless nights by visiting with them at the nurse’s station while completing her work,” Cole said. “When Beke is working the night shift, it gives a sense of security knowing that capable, knowledgeable and caring hands are caring for the residents of Morning Breeze.

Abel received a $500 check, a bouquet of flowers and a certificate during the presentation. She, her family and the throngs of co-workers and residents who joined her topped the afternoon off with cake and live music provided by Jerry Cox.

Friday’s festivities capped off a week of fun at Morning Breeze accentuated by a Hawaiian-themed series of events. Residents and staff bowled with coconuts filling in for bowling balls and pineapples serving as stand-ins for the pins. The week of activities recognized National Nursing Home Week.

The “Aloha Spirit” theme continued with scavenger hunts, a Morning Breeze version of “Minute to Win It” and other activities. Staff members celebrating five and 10 years with the facility were also honored Friday.

Beke Abel, flanked by sons Corey and Chad Abel, Mom Janet Saylor, and boyfriend Rob Giddings, gave thanks to Cole and Tosha Harrison, Morning Breeze director of nursing, as well as her many colleagues.

Abel was Shining Star for the month of November 2013.
