---- — GREENSBURG – A Columbus woman walked away from a car accident on State Road 46 virtually unscathed Friday afternoon.

According to a report at the scene from Decatur County Sheriff Greg Allen, Nancy Sage, 68, was westbound on State Road 46, near County Road 700 West, when her vehicle, a gold 2005 Buick Regal, crossed the center line and left the roadway for unknown reasons.

Sage’s vehicle crashed through a guardrail, rolled onto its side, then came to rest in a grassy area on the opposite side of the road. The accident occurred at approximately 1:20 p.m. Friday.

Emergency crews including members of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, Decatur County EMS and the Burney-Clay Township Fire Department arrived at the scene soon after.

The driver was trapped in the car for approximately 20 minutes before being extricated by the Greensburg Fire Department. Firefighters cut a hole in the car in order to pull Sage to safety. The driver was conscious and alert throughout the ordeal and suffered only minor abrasions to her hands, Sheriff Allen said.

Sage was loaded into an ambulance, treated at the scene and released. A relative picked her up from the crash site as a wrecker service pulled her vehicle from the side of the road.

Deputy Kevin Rohr is investigating the accident.

“She was very fortunate,” Sheriff Allen said of Sage Friday afternoon. “It could have been a lot worse.”
