Miers scholarship awarded at pageant

Tuesday’s story about last week’s Miss Decatur County Pageant omitted the winner of the 2013 Nansi Miers Scholarship, a $500 prize that’s been awarded at the pageant since 2001.

Named for the pageant’s founder, the scholarship was presented Friday night by Miers’ son, David. This year, contestant number 6, Abigail Lamb, was awarded the honor.

Lamb was also the pageant’s First Runner Up behind the winner, Ericka Carman.

City Hall closed for July 4 Holiday

The office of Greensburg Mayor Gary Herbert at City Hall will be closed Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5 in observance of Independence Day. The office will reopen at 8 a.m. Monday, July 8. The Clerk-Treasurer’s office will also be closed at the same time, reopening Monday. Trash for Thursday will be picked up Friday.

Lots of fun planned for Independence Day

The July 4 holiday begins with a bang at dusk at the Decatur County Fairgrounds Wednesday, July 3. The free community fireworks show courtesy of the Decatur County Parks and Recreaction Department also features a sale of nachos, popcorn, hot dogs and drinks by the Greensburg Kiwanis Club. The food will be available from 4 p.m. until the time of the fireworks show, which is expected to begin around 9 to 9:30 p.m. The proceeds from the snacks will go toward other Kiwanis community projects and to Riley Children’s Hospital.

On the holiday proper, the annual Tri-Kappa parade kicks off at the north side of the courthouse square at 10 a.m. During the parade, members of the First Presbyterian Church will distribute bottles of water to thirsty parade-goers. Look for water distribution in front of the church or through members pulling wagons loaded with water.
