DCMH “drive-thru” flu clinic draws a crowd

Greensburg —  Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) opened its first “drive-thru” flu clinic of the season Tuesday evening and drew record numbers of people.

DCMH Director of Community Relations David Fry told the Daily News that a sizable line formed before vaccinations started.

“We had people lined up at 4 p.m.,” Fry said. “They waited an hour to get their flu vaccination.”

Fry, who assisted with traffic control for the event, said the early clinic goers told him the wait was worth it so they could be sure to get a vaccination.

Indeed, when the Daily News attended the clinic around 5:30 p.m., two long lines of cars wound their way from the DCMH Primary Care Building in the back of the south parking lot all the way to Lincoln Street.

Rosie Stier, RN, DCMH infection control coordinator, oversaw the effort.

Stier worked with a team of four other nurses in distributing the vaccinations as people pulled up in their cars. “The most vaccinations we’ve given in one car today is six,” she said. “We’ve had three cars with that many. If the turnout keeps up at this rate, this will likely be our biggest turnout ever.”

No one wanting a vaccination missed out Tuesday evening. The line moved at a steady rate, as the DCMH team of nurses moved from car to car, front to back, completing paper work and then administering vaccinations as patients remained in their cars, sleeves rolled up, a single arm outwardly thrust.

During a brief phone conversation Wednesday morning, Fry said final numbers for the clinic suggest 500 or more people received vaccinations.

He reminded that another drive-thru flu clinic will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Oct. 16, at the DCMH Primary Care Building in the back of the south parking lot.

“And don’t forget that we’re still holding regular flu-vaccination clinics through Oct. 23,” he added.
