---- — GREENSBURG – Saturday looks to be an extremely busy day in Greensburg and throughout the county, with numerous major community events taking place, many of them at the same time.

The largest of the events will be the On Eagle’s Wings 5K walk/run at St. Mary’s School at 8 a.m. The 5K seeks to remember Don and Barb Horan and Stephen and Denise Butz, who were killed in a plane crash last December. At least 1,000 people are expected to take part in the walk, with 100 additional volunteers and another possible 200 participants who have not registered.

Due to the large number of parked cars expected, additional parking will be available at Greensburg High School, the Knights of St. John on Wilder Street and St. Mary’s Church. Participants will be shuttled to St. Mary’s School on Hunter-Robbins Way for the 5K.

The On Eagle’s Wings 5K will serve as the official kickoff for the annual St. Mary’s Festival at the school, an event that both the Horans and the Butzes helped to organize each year. The Saturday portion of the festival has been dubbed “Adult Night” and will feature food, casino-style games, a beer garden, live entertainment and a raffle. The festival will be open from 5:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday. The St. Mary’s festival will continue on Sunday with “Family Day” from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Greensburg-Decatur County Library will be holding its 20th anniversary celebration Saturday as well, from noon to 4 p.m. at the library. The anniversary celebration will include a bounce house, a chance to “dunk-a-librarian” in a dunk tank, food in the form of hot dogs, chips, and drink, snacks of cotton candy and popcorn, a variety of games and a selection of prizes. Registration for the event is preferred and is available on the library’s website,

Also taking place Saturday, at 9 a.m., will be the James Johnson Memorial Coed Softball Tournament. The tournament is sponsored by the South Decatur High School (SDHS) Booster Club and will take place at the Westport Park. Entry fees are $50 per team and the proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships for SDHS students.

Information on the YMCA Tree City Rolling Tour taking place on Saturday is available in a previous article.

Parkside Sweet Shoppe will be hosting a miniature golf tournament Saturday, beginning at noon. Teams will consist of two players each for the double-elimination tournament. The registration cut-off date has passed, but the day should still be filled with fun.

The Tree City Saddle Club will be holding an Open Horse Show Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Decatur County Fairgrounds. Entries are $4 per class, with a minimum of five entries per class for cash prizes. There will be several $100 added classes. A limited number of stalls are available for a $10 fee and there will be a $2 grounds fee per horse. Stephanie McConnell will be judging.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., try-outs for the Greensburg Blast 12 and Under Girls’ Fastpitch Softball Team will take place at the Greensburg Youth Sports Complex. All girls will be expected to bring cleats, a bat, and a glove and are asked to arrive 20 minutes early to sign in and warm up.
