South spikers win Civil War trophy

The North Decatur and South Decatur volleyball teams competed Tuesday at North for the annual Civil War trophy.

A one-sided contest became a thriller that South eventually won in five sets, 19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16 and 10-15.

South took the first two sets, but North forced a fifth set by winning the next two.

“The girls played a very hard-fought game,” said South head coach Lisa Bennett. “I was very proud of their ability to adjust when they needed to, to see the court, and continue to fight for the win.”

South senior Ashley Johannigman led her team with 14 kills.

Senior Julia Miller followed with eight, senior Clarissa Baltus tallied six, and junior Megan Niese tallied four kills. Junior Brittany Koors chipped in one.

Koors led South with 23 assists. Junior Olivia Watkins recorded 2 assists and Mariah Green added one.

Service points: Koors 16, Courtney Billingsley 11, Baltus 7, Niese 7, Miller 5, Johannigman 3.

Service aces: Koors 3, Niese 2, Billingsley 2, Miller 2, Baltus 1.

Johannigman and Miller each recorded two blocks, while Miller and Watkins each added a block-assist.

North fell to 2-4 on the season.

“We came out slow and weren’t ready to play sets 1 and 2,” said North head coach Cathy Fogle. “We played well in 3 and 4 but couldn’t keep the momentum on our side. As a team, we need to finish a game and start playing as soon as we step on the floor in the first set.”

Erin Yager had 28 digs.

Kaitlin Herbert hit 10-14 with 4 kills and 2 block assists.
