Headstart boxsters “start their engines"

Greensburg — There were no exhaust fumes or rumbling engines, but there were nonetheless a number of wipeouts, collisions and lost wheels Wednesday afternoon at the Greensburg Learning Center, as Decatur County Headstart held its annual 500 Boxcar Race.

Tammy Mason, Center Manager for Decatur County Headstart, said this year’s event was her first experience with the race.

“I’ve only been here a year,” she said. “I previously worked in Indy, and, believe it or not, they don’t do anything like this there.”

Headstart students lined up in one of the Learning Center’s grass fields, with homemade cardboard “race cars” draped over them.

Mason explained that the kids and their parents constructed the race cars themselves.

“Some of these parents really went all out,” she said. “We had one little boy from the morning race who got so exhausted because the car was just so heavy.”

For kids who might not have had anyone to help them build a race car, area high school students who attend the Learning Center built extra cars. One of those students even ran with the kids in one of the afternoon “heats.”

“I think she was trying to help encourage the kids to run,” Mason explained.

Organizers let the kids race according to age — four or five — and gender. There was also a morning session for Mason’s other Headstart class.

Mason said she couldn’t be happier about her decision to relocate to Decatur County; events like the 500 Race remind her why.

She stated that parents here generally seem to be more engaged and more interested in what their kids are doing in school.
