Greensburg — Whether the art was music or paint, the young artists at South Decatur Elementary School (SDES) were able to showcase their work for family members at the Fine Arts Spring Fling Tuesday.

As the school year winds down to an end, students were eager to show off all their hard word throughout the year. Excited expressions were visible on many students’ faces as they waited to perform for their families.

The evening started with a concert given by students in the fifth grade band. They played four songs before being joined by their sixth grade counterparts. The combined group of young musicians did two songs together. Afterward, the sixth grade band took over and finished the concert by performing four songs.

While the students shifted positions to assemble on the risers for the choir concert, students presented thank you gifts of hanging flower baskets to band teacher Nicole Smith, and choir teacher, Karen Meeker.

The students expressed their gratitude for all the hard work both teachers have done throughout the year leading the band and choir and sharing their love of music.

The choir concert followed immediately afterward, with fifth and sixth grade choirs performing two songs together and showcasing their ability to sing in parts. Many in the audience found the movements students did as they were singing “John Kanockanocka” to be amusing. The loud, clear voices of the SDES students rang through the gymnasium as their foot stomps shook the floor.

After rearranging themselves on the risers, the sixth grade choir split into boys and girls and sang a lively version of “Anything You Can Do,” from the musical, “Annie Get Your Gun.” The fifth grade choir then took over and sang a rousing rendition of “Ain’t We Got Fun.”

The choirs then combined again and performed two more songs before the risers were cleared from the floor and students performed a dance for the assembled crowd to the delight of everyone present.

Immediately after the concert finished, students and family members were invited to view the school-wide art show in the cafeteria. Art was displayed from every grade in the school, showcasing projects from the whole year. There were first, second and third place ribbons awarded to art from each project.

There was a selection of art spanning the entire school year and a wide variety of projects. SDES art teacher, Lori Bierhaus, tasked students with projects from many different styles of art, allowing them to build their skills while exposing them to various artists and methods of creating art. The talent exhibited by the students is impressive, to say the least, said one SDES parent.

The Fine Arts Spring Fling appeared to be an enjoyable event for both students and parents and many will likely be looking forward to next year’s event. The teachers at SDES support the arts fully and do all they can to nurture the creativity of the students as they learn and grow throughout the year.
